Hitler’s malice also manifested itself in his private life. Geli Raubal was Hitler’s niece and great love. She was 19 years younger than him and spent her years, in practice, locked up in his apartment in Munich. She committed suicide in 1931 with Hitler’s gun. The cause of the suicide is unknown; however, she had previously been denied her request to move from the apartment. Hitler was subsequently deeply depressed, announcing that he was withdrawing from politics and the Nazi Party. He believed that the suicide would enable his opponents to paint him in a very bad light and that he was subsequently politically out of play. At that time, the Nazis had power over neither the police nor the media and, at the same time several negative stories were abounding regarding the party SA corps – e.g. homosexuality. Leaders of the Nazi Party persuaded Hitler to continue as political leader and launched a comprehensive public relations campaign that put Hitler in a positive light. In photo books he was, among other things. described as being a great friend to children, animals and nature – and that his private library consisted of 6,000 books that he had all read! In other words, he was a lovable and well-read uncle with good traditional life values as well as being a far-sighted politician. The campaign was successful, unfortunately also to a large extent abroad.
